Transgender man files complaint against Seattle library over private restroom

“A transgender man filed a complaint with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights on Monday afternoon against the Seattle Public Library for refusing to allow him to use the only private restroom in its downtown building, which is reserved for families.After Ryan “Comet” Alley refused to stop filming his encounter this past Wednesday with a library security officer, he was asked to leave. When he didn’t, the officer banned him from the library for three days. Alley posted the video to Facebook, attracting thousands of views.” (via The Seattle Times)

Transgender woman sues library, insurance provider over surgery cost

“A transgender woman who works for Hamilton County’s public library system is suing her employer and its insurer over a refusal to cover sex reassignment surgery.” Rachel Dovel said in April that she had been urging the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County to cover her gender confirmation surgery since last year.She’s been transitioning from a man, known as Nathan, to a transgender woman since 2014.” (via WLWT)

Library board says no to transgender benefits

“Cincinnati’s public library Tuesday stood by its previous decision not to cover transgender insurance benefits.This would keep insurance costs down, according to the board of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.Library employee Rachel Dovel, who legally changed her name from Nathan last year, brought the issue to light earlier this year after her insurance declined to cover gender confirmation surgery. The board initially declined to change their policy.” (via cincinnati.com)

Mount Horeb school cancels reading of transgender book after lawsuit threat

“Around the same time a bill proposing restrictions on school bathrooms for transgender students prompted an emotional public hearing in an Assembly committee last week, one Dane County school made an effort to be more inclusive of a transgender student. On Monday, students at Mount Horeb Primary Center were scheduled to read and discuss “I Am Jazz,” a children’s book about a transgender girl. A letter was sent out to parents notifying them of the scheduled reading on Nov. 19th. The note, signed by the principal, school psychologist and a counselor, said that the school was working with a student that identifies as a girl but has male anatomy.’ (via The Cap Times)
