Springer opens research articles that can make a difference

“Springer is launching a new online initiative called Change the World, One Article at a Time: Must-Read Articles from 2015. The initiative focuses on articles published in 2015 in Springer journals which deal with some of the world’s most urgent challenges, especially in the fields of energy, food, water, climate, social equality and health. Those articles which are already open access are freely available online on a permanent basis and all other articles have been made freely available until 15 July 2016.” (via Springer)

Springer Nature to extend content sharing – Research Information

“Springer Nature is to extend its year-long nature.com content-sharing trial to enable its research articles to be freely shared with all researchers and the wider public via its authors, subscribers and global media partners.The company will provide authors with free, shareable links to view-only versions of their peer-reviewed research papers, starting with authors of Nature and the Nature research journals.” (via Research Information)

Springer Nature implements ORCID unique digital identifiers for books and chapters

“Springer Nature will collaborate with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) to provide the work of book authors, chapter authors and book editors with digital identifiers, ensuring the recognition of their work. These identifiers can be linked to the researcher’s contributions to enhance scientific discovery and collaboration within the research community. Springer is the first publisher to implement the ORCID identifier in the book workflow process, ultimately providing authors with a digital identifier that distinguishes them from every other researcher. Books from Palgrave Macmillan, which are currently being integrated into SpringerLink, will also be able to use ORCID iDs.” (via Springer)

Springer to collaborate with the Beijing Institute of Technology Press

“Springer will collaborate with the Beijing Institute of Technology Press on the publication of books, journals and digital databases covering the Beijing Institute of Technology’s (BIT) strongest research disciplines. The first major project in the collaboration is the launch of the international book series Key Technology for New Energy Vehicles, which has secured the full support of the Beijing Institute of Technology. Springer is part of the publishing group Springer Nature.” (via Springer)

Springer Nature and UNSILO release pioneering new interactive Related Content service on SpringerLink

“Springer Nature announces the launch of an interactive Related Content service on the SpringerLink platform. The service will make it faster and easier for researchers to discover relevant scientific content and is powered by UNSILO, a Semantic Discovery Engine that captures trending ideas and novel scientific concepts as they emerge. The new interactive Related Content service allows users to filter similar Springer documents by concepts they are interested in. Users can also visually explore documents that describe similar concepts using the new interactive Relationship Map.” (via Springer)

Springer ejournals & book chapters now available for use in MITx courses

“The MIT Libraries have just signed a contract with Springer that allows for use of their ejournals and ebooks in MITx courses. This is the first such arrangement with a journal publisher, and Springer is one of the largest journal publishers in the world. The agreement allows for use of 15 book chapters per calendar year (copyrighted 2005 to present) and 15 journal articles per calendar year (copyrighted 1997 to present). Use is via special links that allow for access to all registered course participants, for educational, personal, scientific, or research purposes.” (via MIT)

UK researchers will benefit from innovative open access agreement between Springer and Jisc

“Starting today, researchers in the UK will be able to publish their articles open access in over 1,600 Springer hybrid journals without cost barriers or administrative barriers. The Springer Compact agreement is a pilot that combines open access publishing and subscription access in one annual fee and will run from October 2015 until December 2018.” (via Eureka)

New licensing terms for Springer eBooks and journals expand online learning permissions

“Starting in October 2015, Springer, part of the newly formed publishing group Springer Nature, will offer customers a way to make their online educational initiatives even more attractive. A unique offer to licensed institutions will allow them to embed, at no extra charge, up to 30 specialized links to Springer eBook and journal content into any non-commercial educational platforms. These could include, for example, learning management systems, MOOC platforms or in-house platforms. The offer, called Online Learning Language, is available to institutions in most parts of the world that purchase Springer’s front list content and applies to Springer’s contemporary library of over 4.7 million articles and book chapters.” (via Springer)

Austrian scholars can publish open access in more than 1,600 Springer journals

“Springer and the Austrian Academic Library Consortium (AALC/Kooperation E-Medien Österreich/KEMÖ) have finalized a wide-ranging agreement for a new Springer Compact deal running from 2016 through 2018. Springer Compact combines reading and open access publishing in one annual fee. Consortium members gain access to over 2,000 Springer journals and also have the option of publishing their research open access in more than 1,600 Springer hybrid journals. The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is also a partner in the newly signed deal.” (via Springer)

Springer partners with Copyright Clearance Center

“Springer has partnered with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) on a new solution enabling corporate life sciences researchers to perform text and data mining (TDM) quickly and easily across publishers. As one of the first publishers to sign onto the service, Springer will offer a significant portion of its full-text article content through the CCC service when launched later this year.” (via Springer)
