New Santa Clara Library Built, Stuck in Legal Limbo

“A brand new library is 99-percent complete in the city of Santa Clara, but thanks to a funding fight it may never open. The fight had a few new voices Friday as dozens of agry Santa Clara residents, some of them children, protested outside the Santa Clara City Council Chambers. “This library has been a long awaited dream of the north of Bayshore residents. This is a library that is going to impact education. It is going to impact economic revenue. It’s going to impact the desirability to live in the north of Bayshore area,” library trustee Kathy Watanabe said.” (via NBC Bay Area)

Supporters of $19M Santa Clara library in uproar after city orders construction halt

“Supporters of a $19.2 million library project in the city of Santa Clara are upset the city has halted construction after Santa Clara County won a court order freezing the city’s former redevelopment assets. Santa Clara’s planned Northside Library, at 695 Moreland Way, is “99.9 percent completed” and was to open Dec. 6, said Maria Daane, executive director of the nonprofit Santa Clara City Library Foundation and Friends. Construction began on the 15,000-square-foot building in July 2012 and so far the foundation, which was developing it with the city, has spent $11 million of $19.2 million the city set aside for it, Daane said.” (via San Jose Mercury News)

Bookmobile drives home the love of reading

“The Santa Clara County Library wants to reach its patrons no matter where they live. And a new, smaller and upgraded bookmobile will help them do just that, library staff has said. “There is a long history of bookmobile service in this district,” said county librarian Nancy Howe. “The county library district covers a large geographical area, and we use the bookmobile to extend the reach of service to residents that either live far away from one of our eight locations or have limited mobility.”
