Qatar National Library Signs with Zepheira to Bring Collections to the Web

“Qatar National Library (QNL) has signed with Zepheira to transform its collection catalog into linked data format and share it broadly on the Web. QNL is the first library in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to bring its collections to the Web with Linked Data technologies developed by Zepheira.Dr. Krishna RoyChowdhury, Director of Library Information at QNL stated, “QNL is one of the leaders of modern, technology-driven libraries in the region. By introducing BIBFRAME, QNL will unlock valuable, authoritative bibliographic data. This is crucial to the access of knowledge and has been so perfectly created and managed by libraries for generations.  We will be the first library in the region to take part in this initiative and publish Arabic content as Linked Data to the Web enabling it to be explored via the search engines.” (via Zepheira)

The tiny, super-rich state of Qatar takes pride in its modernity, with its gleaming skyscrapers and lucrative gas fields. But it is also investing in a huge history project.The Qatar Digital Library began as a brainchild of the former first lady, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al-Missned, and was put together with Richard Gibby from the British Library.” (via NPR)

Qatar residents gain access to Springer’s eBooks and online journals

“Springer and the Qatar National Library (QNL) have signed a groundbreaking agreement for access to eBooks and electronic journals on Springer’s platform SpringerLink. The national license entitles Qatar to use one of the largest scientific, technical and medical eBook collections in the world.” (via Springer)

The British Library and Qatar Foundation unveil project to digitise half a million pages of archive material

“The British Library and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) have unveiled an ambitious partnership to transform people’s understanding of the history of the Middle East, and the region’s relationship with Britain and the rest of the world. The £8.7 million project was announced this morning at the British Library’s flagship building in St Pancras, London. Its plans will digitise more than 500,000 pages from the archives of the East India Company and India Office, in addition to 25,000 pages of medieval Arabic manuscripts – all of which will be made freely available online for the first time.”British Library
