Here in the U.S., the Lomax family became famous in the 1930s, when they recorded America’s folk music.In other countries that are changing fast, people are also trying to hold onto their heritage. The tiny, super-rich state of Qatar takes pride in its modernity, with its gleaming skyscrapers and lucrative gas fields. Qatar residents gain access to Springer’s eBooks and online journals

“Springer and the Qatar National Library (QNL) have signed a groundbreaking agreement for access to eBooks and electronic journals on Springer’s platform SpringerLink. The national license entitles Qatar to use one of the largest scientific, technical and medical eBook collections in the world.” (via Springer)

The British Library and Qatar Foundation unveil project to digitise half a million pages of archive material

“The British Library and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) have unveiled an ambitious partnership to transform people’s understanding of the history of the Middle East, and the region’s relationship with Britain and the rest of the world. The £8.7 million project was announced this morning at the British Library’s flagship building in St Pancras, London. Its plans will digitise more than 500,000 pages from the archives of the East India Company and India Office, in addition to 25,000 pages of medieval Arabic manuscripts – all of which will be made freely available online for the first time.”British Library
