Providence libraries to close for a week in Sept.

“The Providence Community Library System will close its branches for a week in September to make up for a $205,000 cut in city funding. The library system announced it will close Monday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 15. Regular hours will resume on Monday, Sept. 17. Officials say employees agreed to forego the library’s normal 401(k) contribution, preventing further cuts in service for patrons.”

RI library group to give layoff notices to workers

AP – “The nonprofit group that manages Providence’s neighborhood libraries plans to issue layoff notices to workers amid uncertainty about whether it can stay at seven of its nine branches. Since 2009, the Providence Community Library has paid the city $1 annually to lease each branch. But that agreement ends June 30, and workers must receive 30 days notice of potential job loss. Providence Community Library leaders say the problem is with the Providence Public Library organization. The city leases the buildings from that group before it subleases them to Providence Community Library.”
