Lawmakers: Pornography has ‘permeated our society,’ library filters backed

Spokesman Review – “Idaho libraries would be required to filter Internet access for adults, under legislation that just passed the House on a 63-7 vote and headed to the Senate; they’re already required by federal law to filter Internet access for children. Rep. Mack Shirley, R-Rexburg, said a group called “Citizens for Decency” brought the idea to him. “As a result, I’ve done a lot of personal research into this topic,” he told the House. “My personal research has convinced me that pornography poses one of the greatest destructive forces … on the youth.”

WCF Courier – “Legislation approved by the Iowa Senate will limits the access of R or NC-17 rated materials to patrons under age 17. The restrictions were amended to Senate File 410, a bill that proposed to reorganize and streamline library services and operations.”

Mass. official aims to shame library porn viewers

AP – “A city councilor in Massachusetts thinks he’s come up with a way to stop people looking at pornography on public library computers – name them and shame them. Quincy Councilor Daniel Raymondi has asked Mayor Thomas Koch to make public a list of people who have viewed pornography on library computers within the past year. The council unanimously approved a resolution on the idea last week.”

Ohio high court narrowly interprets anti-porn law

AP – “In its unanimous decision, the court said a 2004 law extending the state’s definition of “material harmful to minors” to the Internet is clearly intended to apply only to person-to-person communications – not to generally accessible Web sites and public chat rooms.”

Convicted Beverly librarian wants pension back

MyFoxBoston – “The former director of the Beverly Public Library who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography continues to fight for his public pension. Thomas Scully has appealed a district court’s judge’s order last month revoking his pension to a Superior Court judge. A hearing has not been scheduled.
