A Pseudo-Librarian on a Pseudo-Adventure

WSJ – “There’s a part of Rebecca Makkai’s new novel, “The Borrower,” that feels eerily true to life. The story’s sheepishly literate heroine, Lucy, narrates life from the other side of children’s librarian desk in a way that suggests the author knows what it feels like to plaster bulletin boards with bright paper cutouts of dinosaurs. The book is pure fiction, but author Makkai did once scan books over a counter. “”I was a pseudo-librarian,” Makkai said. “I took a job for a couple of semesters in graduate school at the library. But when I took the job, I was already writing the book.”
