Mayor to Miami-Dade libraries: get more efficient to receive more money

“With Miami-Dade libraries facing a budget crisis, Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Friday called for the system to trim spending more than the 25 percent cut sustained in the last four years. “I don’t think we’re as efficient as we could be,’’ Gimenez told members of a task force he appointed to recommend changes to the library system. “If we had all the funding in the world, we’d still need to be as efficient as possible.” (via MiamiHerald.com)

Task force begins to tackle how to fund, operate Miami-Dade libraries

“The campaign to save Miami-Dade County’s public libraries from closure and downsizing, which lost some of its urgency when the county found money to fund the system for one more year, will rev up again — this time, for the long haul. A task force convened by Mayor Carlos Gimenez will meet for the first time Wednesday. Its goal: to find a way for the beleaguered public library system to survive in a time of digital books and shrinking county budgets.” (via MiamiHerald.com)

Miami-Dade mayor unveils task force to study future of public libraries

“Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s administration has come up with a task force and a timeline to tackle challenges faced by the county’s cash-strapped public libraries. County commissioners were able to save the libraries from significant budget cuts this summer by finding money to keep them afloat one more year. But by next year, the library system faces a projected $21 million hole, Gimenez said in a memo late Tuesday.” (via Miami Herald)

One-year reprieve for Miami-Dade libraries means cuts may still loom

“Miami-Dade commissioners unexpectedly granted libraries a one-year reprieve Wednesday, though painful cutbacks will loom over the system unless the county comes up with a long-term plan for to fund it. By raiding one-time reserves to avoid scaling back library hours and laying off 169 workers, the commission put off making a difficult choice between cutting services or raising the property-tax rate, saying it hopes to find a middle path over the next few months.” (via Miami Herald)

Miami-Dade will raid reserves to avoid library layoffs, maintain hours

“In a surprise last-minute move, Miami-Dade commissioners decided in the wee hours Wednesday morning to raid rainy-day reserves to avoid laying off 169 library workers and slashing library hours in the coming budget year. Though the action will save the jobs of employees who turned out in force to a public hearing that began Tuesday afternoon, it will create a whopping $20 million budget hole next year to fund the county’s 49 public libraries at the same level as this year.” (via Miami Herald)
