Hachette, Amazon end nasty feud with deal on book sales

“Publisher Hachette and Amazon ended Thursday an acrimonious feud over online book sales that highlighted Amazon’s market dominance and fuelled protests from leading authors like John Grisham and Stephen King. After six months in which Amazon clamped down on sales of Hachette Publishing Group books on its website, the two announced a multi-year agreement on ebook and print book sales in the US market.” (via AFP)

Hachette Says Amazon Is Delaying Delivery of Some Books

“Amazon has begun discouraging customers from buying books by Malcolm Gladwell, Stephen Colbert, J. D. Salinger and other popular writers, a flexing of its muscle as a battle with a publisher spills into the open. Hachette Strikes Deal With Follett to Sell Ebooks Into School Libraries

“Hachette has struck a deal with educational material distributor Follett to sell its ebook content into school libraries. It’s the second such deal with a major publisher that Follett has signed in August. Penguin Random House has also signed on for school library distribution. For years, major trade houses have been trying to figure out effective ways to sell into the pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school library market and it seems like Follett may be stepping in to fill the void.” (via Digital Book World)

Publishing consolidation continues: Hachette buys Hyperion

“The publishing industry got a little smaller Friday when Hachette announced its plans to buy Hyperion, the adult imprint owned by the Walt Disney Co. Disney, under Disney Publishing Worldwide, will retain its children’s books. Hachette, formally known as Hachette Book Group, is one of six existing major publishers — a number that will be reduced to five after the pending merger of Penguin with Random House. And that might drop to four if a rumored deal between Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins comes to fruition.” (via LA Times.com)
