Top librarian job up for grabs; head of Library and Archives Canada could bag a $226,500 salary

“The search has begun for Canada’s top librarian. The next head of Library and Archives Canada — who will make between $192,600 and $226,500 a year, according to the job posting — will replace controversial figure Daniel Caron, who resigned from the post in May after coming under fire for inappropriate spending. Caron’s starting salary when he took the job in 2009 was between $180,800 and $212,700.” (via Canada.com)

Elliott Shore Named ARL Executive Director

“The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Board of Directors has appointed Elliott Shore as Executive Director of the Association, effective January 1, 2013. Dr. Shore is currently Chief Information Officer, Constance A. Jones Director of Libraries, and Professor of History at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.”

Villaraigosa names new Los Angeles librarian

“Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has selected a new librarian to head the city’s sprawling, $113-million-a-year library system. John Szabo, whose appointment was announced Thursday, comes from Atlanta, where he has been the director of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System since 2005. While there, he implemented an online learning program, established an archive of material related to gays and lesbians and expanded the system’s African American culture and history archives, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Public Library. Villaraigosa said in the statement Szabo is uniquely qualified to lead Los Angeles “into a new era of innovation, expanded services and enhanced accessibility.”

West Hollywood’s Standup Librarian isn’t laughing

LA Times – “So a comedian walks into a library and decides to work there …” That’s not my line. It’s from Meredith Myers, the self-described Standup Librarian who just had something very unfunny happen to her. She got fired from a West Hollywood library job that she loved.”
