O’Connell School opens, but 2,000 books are ruined

Bristol Press – “Just days before school was supposed to open last week, torrential rains from Tropical Storm Irene swelled the Pequabuck River, which overflowed its banks behind the school and poured into the building, wrecking classrooms and destroying about 2,000 books — a quarter of those in the school library. Cleanup crews worked — sometimes around the clock — to pump out the water and then clean up the layer of muck left from the riverbed, but school officials worried about air quality and kept O’Connell closed through the holiday weekend. “It was very disheartening a week ago,” said Principal Mike Audette. He said the air is fine now and the awful stench of river sludge is gone.”
