NY man to be sentenced for rare document thefts

“A presidential memorabilia collector who has acknowledged stealing thousands of rare and valuable documents from historical societies and archives nationwide was set to be sentenced Wednesday in federal court. Barry Landau was caught stealing documents from the Maryland Historical Society in July 2011. A subsequent investigation concluded Landau, 64, or New York, stole at least 4,000 documents worth more than $1 million from archives around the country.”

Historian seeks to sell assets

AP – “A presidential historian charged with conspiring to steal documents from archives throughout the Northeast is asking for court permission to sell artwork and other valuables to cover his living expenses, according to a motion filed Friday in U.S. District Court. Barry Landau, 63, needs cash to pay expenses such as the $2,700 rent on his midtown Manhattan apartment, health insurance and food, according to the filing from attorney Andrew White. Landau’s terms of release require court permission before he can sell or dispose of any assets.”

Presidential historian allowed to return home

AP – “A federal judge in Maryland is allowing a presidential historian charged with conspiring to steal valuable documents to return to his New York City apartment with GPS monitoring and no Internet access. A judge on Friday denied an appeal of the release of Barry Landau over prosecutors’ arguments that the historian poses a flight risk and could destroy more documents the government has not yet found.

Librarian Accused Of Embezzlement Put On Paid Administrative Leave

KRCTV – “The Redding School District librarian accused of embezzling money and stealing books will not be back on the job in August, but she’ll still be getting paid. Wanell Stolz is accused of embezzling more than 13-thousand dollars from the Sycamore School parent-teacher- faculty club and taking hundreds of library books.”
