Books Found Burned On Porch Of Hartland Library

“Two incidences of library books being burned on the porch of the Hartland Public Library earlier this month were acts of random vandalism, officials say. The library’s new director, Amy Wisehart, said that the books were taken from the small grey cabinet placed outside the library on the porch, called the ‘‘Little Free Library.’’ The cabinet is part of an initiative for rural libraries who aren’t able to stay open as many hours as they’d like.” (via Vermont Standard)

30-ton book collection in Canada slated for burning

“How to dispense with 30 tons of books? Burn them, the custodian of a massive Canadian collection has decided.

It’s the second time the book collection in Saskatoon has been slated for a fiery end. Seven years ago, when her neighbor died, Shauna Raycraft intervened and saved the books from destruction. The neighbor’s widow, faced with the prospect of getting rid of her husband’s 300,000 books, had wanted to simply burn them. Raycraft had the books trucked to her property. Over the better part of a decade, she has managed to sort only a third of them; about 200,000 remain.

Official: Books burned in Afghanistan extremist

AP – ” A military official says Muslim holy books that were burned in a pile of garbage at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan had been removed from a library at a nearby detention center because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions. A military official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it appeared the Qurans and other Islamic readings were being used to fuel extremism, and that detainees apparently were leaving notes for one another inside them.”
