Missouri libraries facing funding crisis

“With less funding and increased costs, Missouri libraries face a major challenge. Libraries across the state are already experiencing funding cuts, which could potentially worsen with Gov. Jay Nixon’s proposed budget for 2016 that includes nearly $6 million less in funds, or an estimated 80 percent reduction, for libraries statewide. The governor’s decision to withhold state aid for libraries is currently creating a revenue shortfall for Mid-Continent Public Library of about $400,000, said Mid-Continent President and CEO Steve Potter. With Nixon’s proposed budget for next year, the shortfall could be as much as another $200,000.” (via Examiner)

Omaha City Council likely to restore some funds for libraries, but other budget vetoes expected to stand\

“Omaha City Council members say they’re worried about long waiting lists for new books at Omaha libraries, and they’re not inclined to cut funding and risk even longer wait times. Councilman Chris Jerram said he expects the council to override a mayoral budget veto and restore $175,000 for new materials at the library in 2015. Councilman Rich Pahls, who had provided the crucial fifth vote for the library funding, said he will vote for an override on Tuesday.” (via Omaha.com)

Emanuel to cut Chicago libraries’ hours

Chicago Sun Times – “Chicago’s public libraries will reduce their hours in 2012, even as the city continues to build new libraries, Mayor Rahm Emanuel acknowledged Tuesday. Emanuel defended the library cuts built into his 2012 budget, saying they’re a small price to pay at a time when other major cities are closing libraries. The reduced hours will be concentrated on Mondays and other days and times when library usage is the lowest, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.”
