OBAMA PUSHES READING THROUGH EBOOK, LIBRARY INITIATIVES

“Linking reading to technology, the White House marshaled major book publishers to provide more than $250 million in free e-books to low-income students and is seeking commitments from local governments and schools across the country to ensure that every student has a library card. President Barack Obama was to announce the two initiatives Thursday at a Washington library as part of his two-year-old ConnectED program that aims to improve education through digital connectivity.” (via The Associated Press)

AP SOURCES: CHICAGO ELECTION DELAYS OBAMA LIBRARY DECISION

“President Barack Obama will hold off on announcing the location for his future presidential library until after Chicago’s runoff election for mayor, two people familiar with the decision said, in a bid to avoid politicizing his legacy project.Last year the Barack Obama Foundation, which is screening proposals for the library, said the president and first lady Michelle Obama would announce the winner by the end of March. But with the Chicago race still up in the air, the announcement is no longer expected until after the April 7 runoff, said the individuals, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the library.” (via The Associated Press)

OBAMA GETS UPDATE ON SEARCH FOR PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY SITE

Chicago Park District approves land transfer for U. of C. Obama library bid

“The Chicago Parks District board voted Wednesday to transfer roughly 20 acres of parkland to the city if the University of Chicago is chosen to host the Barack Obama Presidential Library, a move the library’s foundation said “improves Chicago’s bids” for the facility. The vote was part of a meeting at the Jesse White Community Center on the Near North Side that represented the third faceoff between preservationists who oppose the plan to transfer at least 20 acres of public land to the city and community residents who support it as a means of economic development.” (via Chicago Tribune)

President Obama’s budget increases library funding

“President Barack Obama today transmitted to Congress the Obama Administration’s nearly $4 trillion budget request to fund the federal government for fiscal year 2016, which starts October 1, 2015. The President’s budget reflected many of the ideas and proposals outlined in his January 20th State of the Union speech. Highlights for the library community include $186.5 million in assistance to libraries through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This important program provides funding to states through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).” (via ALA)
