Chicago to make one unified bid for Obama presidential library

“Chicago is going to make one unified bid for President Barack Obama’s Presidential Library and Museum, with the University of Chicago and other city schools not making solo plays, Mayor Rahm Emanuel told me Thursday. “We are going to run a process. But my goal is to have the City of Chicago, with its major educational institutions, have a single proposal,” Emanuel said.” (via Chicago Sun-Times)

Columbia University pursuing Obama presidential library: Sweet

“New York’s Columbia University admitted Thursday it is pursuing President Barack Obama’s presidential library and museum, finally coming clean after not being upfront about its interest in November. While it is premature to comment on a library selection process that has yet to be initiated, Columbia looks forward to learning more about the objectives that will inform President Obama’s ultimate decision when that information becomes available,” Columbia’s Robert Hornsby, associate vice president for media relations told me.” (via Chicago Sun-Times)

Hawaii Makes Its Case for Obama’s Library – Why Not Bring It to the Beach?

“When Gov. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii was asked to appear in a video urging President Obama to make the state the home of his presidential library, the governor’s appeal was simple and, he said, reflective of the state’s “Aloha spirit.” With his Shetland sheepdog, Kanoa, at his side, Mr. Abercrombie made his case: “I don’t know how sophisticated this looks back in Washington, but my pitch to the president is: ‘I’m here with Kanoa. Why don’t you bring Sunny and Bo out and we can sit on the beach?’ ” (via NYTimes.com)

HAWAII OVERSHADOWED BY CHICAGO FOR OBAMA LIBRARY

“Not far from these wind-swept shores, Barack Obama was born and raised, soaking in an island sensibility that his family says he’s carried with him throughout his journey as president. Yet in the search for a home for his future presidential library, Hawaii is playing the underdog, overshadowed by Chicago and the commanding role it plays in Obama’s story. It’s not for lack of trying. A high-level campaign has been underway here since Obama won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 – before it was even clear he’d win his party’s nomination, much less the presidency.” (via AP)

Obama’s Library, Advisers’ Dream

“This spring, a longtime staff member for President Obama, Alyssa Mastromonaco, let a friend in on a secret. Mr. Obama had assigned her to begin planning his post-presidential library and foundation. It was a plum task. Amid a worsening crisis in Syria, early reports of ghosts haunting the HealthCare.gov machine and a dreary sense of second-term setbacks, the foundation glowed with the allure of an eternal Obama afterlife, or at least better days ahead. For Ms. Mastromonaco, the project promised the chance to shape a historic legacy and draft a road map for a 55-year-old former president’s remaining life’s work.” (via NYTimes.com)

UIC makes bid for Obama presidential library and museum

“The University of Illinois at Chicago announced Sunday that it wants to house President Barack Obama’s future library and museum, joining a growing list of contenders. UIC is exploring at least five sites on its Near West Side campus, said university spokesman Bill Burton. The university started discussing the idea of an Obama presidential library in May and is waiting for the White House to make an announcement before possibly moving forward with any proposals, he said. In a statement, the school’s chancellor pointed to several reasons why UIC would make a good venue.” (via Chicago Tribune)

Race, class emerge as issues in Obama library battle

“President Obama probably won’t make a final decision on where his presidential library and museum will be located until near the end of his second term in the White House. But here In his adopted hometown — particularly the neighborhoods where Obama made a name for himself as a community organizer before entering politics — the issues of race and class play a central role in the debate over where in the city the shrine to the first African-American president’s legacy belongs.” (via USA Today)

University makes play for Obama presidential library

“The University of Illinois at Chicago wants President Obama to bring his future presidential library to the city campus, USA TODAY has learned. Bill Burton, a spokesman for UIC, confirmed to USA TODAY on Friday that Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares decided in May to form a university exploratory committee to look into bidding for the library and museum that will be built after Obama leaves office. Burton said he had no details about who is on the exploratory committee or what, if any, actions they have taken thus far in their pursuit.” (via USA Today)
