American Girl dolls are at home in Manassas, Leesburg libraries

“Kit, Julie, Molly, Kaya, Josefina, Samantha and Addy rarely have the chance to get together these days. The American Girl doll collection at Bull Run Regional Library in Prince William County is kept on a shelf behind a counter. But, one day recently, Kit Kittredge sat there alone. The friends had been checked out by some of the library’s youngest patrons, who can now borrow the dolls just like books.” (via The Washington Post)

“Saving for an American Girl doll might take months or even a year. But now there’s a way for local kids to bring one home without paying the $110 price tag. Beginning this month, anyone with an Arlington County library card can sign up to borrow one of eight dolls for a week. “They’re really expensive,” said Julia Karell, branch manager at the Cherrydale Library. “I hear kids talking about the dolls, and the parents say, ‘No way.’?” (via The Washington Post)

“After one visit, she returned with her hair in dreadlocks. Another time, her long blond locks were primly fashioned into a traditional bun. One day, she came back wearing a uniform of the exclusive all-girls Brearley School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. These have been the many phases of Kirsten Larson, an American Girl doll who sat on a shelf in the Ottendorfer branch of the New York Public Library, in the East Village, until a resourceful children’s librarian began lending her to girls, many of whose parents, because of financial or feminist reasons, resist buying the dolls.”
