From the New York Times

"Under pressure from publishers to shake up its sleepy image, the organization that presents the National Book Awards is planning to give its annual medal for distinguished contribution to American letters to Stephen King."

cool! King's book On Writing is probably the best book about the writing process I've ever read. Great insights for non-fiction writing too, dealing with procrastination and other concentration tips.

King has contributed a lot to the horror genre. We wouldn't have cult authors in the genre today if it wasn't for King making horror popular and showing that it can sell. I'm not a huge fan of King's fiction but I am a massive horror fan, so I owe a lot to him anyway!

"It's about fucking time" This is your response? Perhaps that is why Steven King recieved a LITERARY AWARD!!!! The lines are very blurred as to what is literature and what sells books and movies.Steven King should not have recieved a LITERARY AWARD. Yes, without a doubt he writes well but no matter how many people buy books and go to see his films(including myself) he still cannot stand against Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, (by the way, his writings are far superior where the fright factor is concerned)Jane Austen. and these are just the Americans. Steven King winning the award is just another flaw in our literary world.Congratulations.

Stephen King has gotten more "non-literary" people interested in reading than any other author. He's often a stepping stone to other, more "literary" works. People who get hooked on King read the books he's been influenced by, like Lord of the Flies, Lord of the Rings, and others. While his style may not be as pretentious as most "literary-worthy" authors' works are, they do involve readers immensley in a story. Isn't that the point of books anyway? People who bust King are just elitists who quote from Ayn Rand and Sylvia Plath and don't take the time to actually enjoy a book.
