Free News Alerts and more from LLRX

The latest issue of LLRX has an article on Free News Alerts, by Cindy Carslon:

"Do you have to monitor the news as part of your job? Maybe you have a list of clients whose names you look for in major papers. It's always good to know when something newsworthy happens to a client, and the same news can sometimes mean a business opportunity for you. Or maybe your office has set up a watch for breaking news. Many businesses did that after September 11 and during the later concern over Anthrax. Just recently, of course, many of us were looking for news connected to the electrical blackout in the Northeast: how it affected travel, the expected duration of the outages, etc. You may even want to monitor the news for mentions of your own name, if you are a newsworthy sort of person or are involved in a business or project that gets some press. Or perhaps you are keeping an eye on your competition."

The main thrust of the article is a comparison to Yahoo News Alerts and Google News Alerts (in beta). I haven't used Yahoo News alerts in a long time, and have yet to test out Google News Alerts, but Yahoo has clearly beaten Google to providing news via RSS.

On another note, I hope that Sabrina will continue to churn out issues of LLRX, even though they have become more and more sporadic.

Also of interest for keeping current, this article on blogs and law firm marketing, with an interesting discussion on news aggregators.

My bet is that commerical media monitoring services (Rehame, Media Monitors, etc) will go belly up within a few years. These free services can be more timely and customised than the commercial services ever were. Oh and of course, free.
