This is really just an extension of what news librarians have been doing for years. When a topic is hot, I do a lot of current awareness stuff like finding articles, websites, reports and forward them on to journalists. With journalists, it's always a toss-up between providing general links (as with a blog) or working closely with individuals to provide details for stories that they are working on. Librarians also need to be careful to walk the line between providing timely information and attempting to shape the news agenda.

I do understand the value of RSS, but seeing comments like "when I switched over to "RSS-only" content, I forgot about it," makes me fairly uncomfortable. I think Walt's point above re: "all librarians" is a good one, and am unclear why you would want either to ignore all non-RSSified content or force it into an RSS mold. I've used newsreaders, and have found that I prefer overall to visit actual sites and get content in context - so now I use a combination of Amphetadesk, e-mail newsletters and alerts, IM, and a personal web portal I created for myself. I think that as librarians we shouldn't lock ourselves into only one way of receiving content and that you lose a certain element of serendipity that way. Why does it have to be RSS or nothing; why can't it be both RSS and other avenues of communication?

Ok ... since this morning I may be a new convert - I am using newsmonster (www.newsmonster.org) for Mozilla at the moment, and am so much more pleased with the way it gives feeds in context than with AmphetaDesk or the other aggregators I've tried. But I still see RSS as one avenue among many...
