Kerri makes a good point here. I have always thought that one of the cons of weblogs (yes, there are many cons - Jenny and I always go back and forth on similar topics over drinks whenever we see each other) is that there is way too much crossover of information. I might see the same post on about 10 different weblogs throughout the day, and this is time consuming and frustrating. There isn't much that we can do about this, but one method that I have used is that when I notice that one weblog is continuously regurgitating information that have been mentioned elsewhere, I unsubscribe to that feed. Its not a perfect system, but it has worked out pretty well for me.
Hmm...this brings up a good point for my aggregator wish list. The ability for the software to automatically filter out posts that mention the same backlink post (sorta like an anti-trackback feature) and place them in a separate folder so that it doesn't fill up my main aggregator interface. Make it an option because I'm sure that many will disagree with my views. (Hey Kode, there's another one!!)

As far as the blog author is concerned, the information is not repetition if someone else has posted it or commented about it elsewhere.
One of the ways I blog is for example to post my comments on an issue that I feel like discussing and talking to people about. And just because someone has posted the same resource or commented about in another blog will not stop me from doing the same. Perhaps, if I'm aware of similar and related comments/blog, I'll refer and link to them.
Actually, the repetition might be a good thing for blogging. How else do you build a momentum for similar blogs? Not everyone is reading the same feeds. In addition, not everyone reads feeds. There are people out there that are interested to read what's in the blogsphere that are not themselves bloggers. To them the 'repetition' would not mean anything because the chances for them to realize that there is repetition are very slim.
So, yes, I think I agree with Michael that issues such as repetitions should be a function for aggregators.... maybe...

So, on with the commentary. You want to filter out posts with the same backlink post, huh? Well, what if you don't happen to subscribe to the source of the backlinked post? You'll want to read the info at least once, won't you? So how to prioritize? Would I have to then rank all my aggregated blogs in some sort of pecking order, so that I'm sure to read when you link to something, rather than when Jessamyn, David, Jenny or whoever does the same (assuming I'd put you first, buddy...no guarantees though ;-0 )?
Do we really all have the same thing to say about a particular link? Some are assuredly guiltier than others, but we don't read those commentary-free verbatim quoters and link dumpers anyway, do we? Sure, I'm tired of reading posts about the Google calculator feature, but I'd rather know that a mass of people find it useful and have them point out different features to me, which saves me tinker-time in the long run.
Imho, it's not rote repetition if the voice changes and I still think it's the voice(s) of blogs that make them interesting. So if many voices are talking about essentially the same thing, you know what? I'm somewhat more likely to listen. And if a blogger brings no voice or perspective to the table, I likely won't read it anyway, unless they've truly found that pined-after info niche.
So in the end, as I've said before, I trust only myself to filter out redundancies/irrelevancies, a task for which I have developed great speed. Although your anti-trackback filter suggestion is a provocative one (and probably easy to implement), it's not an option I would be likely to use.

If there are hundreds of library weblogs that just give unannotated links, then deduping is a great idea. But, you know, I'll be damned if I see more than one or two library weblogs that do that. And I'm real close to deleting those weblogs from my bookmarks, diligent though they may be.
If I'd relied on "deduping" software for CIPA-related information, I most surely would not have prepared the special Cites & Insights issue: Most of it was about different takes on the same event.
Within a field, I believe weblogging as "links of interest" [without worthwhile commentary] reached its peak some time ago. LISNews never operated that way; Jenny sure as heck never operated that way (and that's a compliment).
I like "link dumpers." I'll have to remember that.

When I do, I try to write my own commentary that will make it interesting to all readers and not just those who happen to also be librarians. I use a lot of international long distance and found their international prepaid calling cards to be the lowest rates I have ever seen. If you want to use a signal meter,
satellite dish network I suggest you swing the dish until digital satellite tv you get the highest needle deflection
dishsinologies or audible tone then maintaining that free satellite tv horizontal angle, raise or lower the free satellite tv elevation of the dish to see if the free dish network meter will go higher still. At the
direct tv highest signal level, watch the screen dish network for the digital readout changing. If free satellite tv it doesn't, then you're not pointing at the right satellite system.
