So, I am here in my hotel room blogging on a dial-up connection (amazing that a Computers in Libraries conference without broadband in the rooms – Blech!!). Not fun, my friends.
Anyway, onto the good stuff. I attended two great sessions today by Mary Ellen Bates: One on answering the unanswerable question and the other on 30 Web research tips in 40 minutes. A few tips that I got out of the latter:
1) Use different spelling of your search terms to make up for different regions (i.e – labor v labour)
2) Put your search terms in Word and set the language to UK English to get different spellings of words and
3) When doing research on the web, go to a fee-based database (like LexisNexis and type your keyword and atleast6(www) to retrieve articles that may have been written about particular webites for your topic.
My presentation (which can be found here) on keeping current also went well. When I first looked up from the podium and saw standing room only, I thought that I was in the wrong place. Thanks everyone who attended my session.
I also had the opportunity to meet with Jenny again, as well as go to dinner with Sabrina and get a chance to chat with Brian Smith. More tomorrow
