I have a very short attention span. My mind wanders between three different thoughts at any given moment during the day. I'm not sure where this comes from, but I have never been able to concentrate on anything for longer than 30 minutes straight (unless you count watching hour-long programs on television-for some reason, that isn't a problem, although 2 hour movies can be). My mother told me that I have had this "problem" since I was young and I guess I haven't truly grown out of it.
I have been reading short stories for about 4 years now. I first became enamored in the genre after picking up the latest O'Henry Awards, published annually by Random House. I took immediately to them after reading the first few stories and I have a simple theory as to why this occurred. Because they are short. 25 pages at the most. And I read each one in under 30 minutes. My short attention span can't tolerate a lenghty novel (or a short one for that matter). I need a short, readable story that immediately captures my attention, then lets it go as soon as it grasps on (sort of like my view on how to use the Web - Get on, get it, get out).
Long gone are the days that I read 500 page Stephen King novels, or even a 220 page Joyce Carol Oates. But give me a short story, either in a collection or in the various magazines in which they are published, and I am a happy reader.
Even if you think that the solution to the problem of our country's inhabitants not reading as much as they used to is by reading shorter books, I would like to take it a step further. Give 'em a short story first. Baby steps, baby steps.
Posted by Steven at February 13, 2003 10:44 PMI have the same problem and love short fiction too. If you haven't already, give nonfiction essays a try too. David Sedaris is great, so are the Best American Essay books that come out each year. That helps to introduce you to other writers you might like. Then you can read a whole book of essays by one person. I can read a novel or complete nonfiction book, but it takes forever. Ooops, this is getting long and I don't want to risk losing you ;)
