San Jose mayor asks council to impose pay cuts on workers to save libraries, community centers

Mercury News – “Declaring that San Jose’s public employees have refused to do their share to balance the budget, Mayor Chuck Reed on Friday called on the City Council to impose pay and benefit cuts on six unions he had previously asked for voluntary concessions. Reed’s aggressive proposal is the equivalent of a nuclear strike in a city where unions long have enjoyed political power. And he likely faces a hard fight with the council, many of whom owe their jobs to labor support.”
