Proto-librarians and computers

Caveat Lector – “It’s not about programming. It’s not about any specific computer-related skill. It can’t be. Programming isn’t all we do with and to computers. Doing things with and to computers is not the only challenge that computers bring into libraries. If we blindly charge ahead and teach programming and nothing but programming, we are doing library-school students a serious disservice, the same disservice we do them now when we blindly teach MARC without so much as a glance at data modeling or metadata or any of that fun stuff.”
