While perhaps access to Second Life should be monitored and limitted to PG-rated content (of which there is an enormous wealth), banning Second Life in the classroom would be tantamount to banning the Internet when it was forming. This focussed on a specific environment (an island called Jokaydia) which is entirely devoted to utilising Second life for education. We also learned about a successful collaborative program between U.S. and Japanese students. I don't think it should be used for recreation in schools, however there may well be a place for it to be used in the classroom under supervision with specific educational objectives. Blanket bans would be an over-reaction and miss the educational opportunities that this environment has to offer.
