Wikipedia is an interesting concept. As a starting research point, I wouldn’t completely discourage its use. I would simply encourage the education of its users with the old and very appropriate adage: “consider the source.”

I agree with jdb. I encourage students to begin research with Wikipedia if they know little about a topic, need some background or must limit their focus. Its outline, related links, bibliograpies, graphics and additional resources also offer the amateur researcher added help. Rarely does a teacher allow Wikipedia in a bibliography or works cited page, so students understand its limitations.
