FARQs?

November 15th, 2007

Emily Clasper – “With the proliferation of library blogs, I’m always surprised to see how few libraries blog their reference questions… especially the common ones”

A FARQ is a Frequently Asked Reference Question. This is a wonderful idea and one that I have advocate for a long time. Go Emily!

Why a blog? Isn’t this a natural role for a wiki? And I’ve heard of a few libraries doing just that: Building a reference wiki with real (massaged for privacy) questions and answers…

Somehow, reverse chronological order just doesn’t seem like the natural way to build an FAQ-equivalent.

Not to be confused with this FARQ: http://www.fark.com/farq/

The University of Alberta’s Data Library uses a wordpress blog to publish reference questions and answers. They call it the Data Interest Group for Reference Services (DIGRS). Some really NEAT questions and answers are listed there. They had a library school student categorize the posts recently.
