More on Sony
October 8th, 2007I just received an e-mail from Valerie Motis, Director of Corporate Communications at Sony Electronics. She sent along a note from Steve Haber, Senior Vice President of Sony Electronics Digital Imaging and Audio Division, regarding the reactions from the “Sexier Than a Librarian” advertisement. She gave me permission to post his note:
“Thank you to all the librarians who took the time to contact us regarding our recent advertising campaign for the Reader electronic reading device, which pointed out that it is “sexier than a librarian.” As a marketer, it’s gratifying to see that ads are striking a chord. In this case, however, the reaction wasn’t exactly what I expected it would be.
That said, please know that the ad was not meant to disparage or question the sexiness of librarians, but to be a playful twist on the age-old fantasy (which many of you referenced) of the sexy librarian behind the thick eye glasses. For the record, I do think librarians are sexy, I think reading is sexy and I believe Sony’s Reader is sexy too.
We are currently working hand-in-hand with libraries on pilot programs for digital reading and the initial feedback has been positive. Hopefully together, we have enough sex appeal to lure non-readers to the written word!
I want you to know that your voices have had an impact on the campaign. With the debut of our latest Reader model, new ads will be coming soon. Keep an eye out for them.”
