More on Rankings

Walt Crawford (Who points out that he is not a librarian…again) – “Rankings are fun, we’re going to get “graded” whether we like it or not, and it’s also all a little silly. But fun.”

Walt – You’re a librarian. Sorry to break it to ya. MLS or not. You ARE a librarian.

Steve–Tell that to any public institution hiring a professional librarian. I can assure you that all the books and articles and professional activity don’t make up for that degree. And I don’t think “Oh, Steve Cohen says I’m a librarian” will get me a waiver.

In context, I mentioned it because I fail two of the supposed criteria for the OEDb list. (The other one: lishost.org isn’t primarily a library blog domain, and walt.lishost.org is a subdomain of it…)

I agree with Walt. He (and I in a much more mundane capacity) are *not* librarians — we manage information, we write about information, we disseminate information, but one thing we can’t truthfully write is “I am a librarian”. In Walt’s case that is not having an MLS, in mine it’s not having, nor ever having wnated to get, Chartered Librarian status.
I never thought that I’d ever write a post or a comment that joined my name with Walt’s, my guru of style, but we do have this one thing in common — we ain’t librarians. And nor are a lot of people writing about the management of information librarians!
