Techdirt – “It’s pretty common for people to do Google background checks on prospective employees (or potential dates) these days, so it’s a little surprising to see people still put all sorts of information that could harm their job prospects online.”
I’m thinking that I should start to include this social stuff when asked to perform background checks.

Years ago, in the infancy of listservs, I witnessed someone absolutely slammed (including use of profanity). He mildly replied, apologizing for the error of his ways and stated that he had the common good at heart, in fact, he was an attorney & president of a major national library advocacy agency. The slammer just came back and slammed him again. I made a note to NEVER hire this person…and to check listservs for suspected idiocy in job candidates.
During an interview for a faculty position, one of the interviewers noted he thought my hair would be longer…because he had seen a picture of me in a news article that ran about librarians with tattoos. I hadn’t thought about the Google factor…luckily, that was the extent of my radical online presence. I got the job *grin*
