New Library Rules in Sonoma County Library

CBS – “Cell phones will be allowed inside but noise levels must be kept down to avoid disturbing others, headphones are advised and the phone should be in vibration mode. Violators will be asked to modify their behavior immediately or leave the library.”

I continue to be amazed that libraries need to make “special regulations” for specific behaviors, such as cell phone use.

I’m sure that most libraries already have policies that cover excessive noise, being a bother to others, inappropriate behavior, and so forth. As long as they have a general rule, why bother with all the specific ones? Do we really need specific ones that list every potentially offensive behavior?

But of course being librarians we have to pick at every nit and worry about every possible thing that may never happen. Oh well, next there will be a specific policy listing which types of IEDs are allowed and which aren’t.

I would like the policy to have NO cell phones allowed. If people need to check their messages they should go out to the lobby. They will continue to talk too loud and leave their phone on. I will continue to have to listen to new pop tunes, favorite love songs or rappers alerting the caller to a new and important message like “what shall I get for dinner on the way home?’ or “did you know Kathy and Jay are back together again?” as I try to study for class. I no longer go to the Central library to study, read or think. I go to the SRJC library where there is a quiet room.
