Eastern Illinois University has an even-better idea. They rent textbooks to their students for a set fee. Students pick up all the assigned texts for their courses after they register and return them at the end of the semester. Fantastic savings, everyone gets the textbook. More universities should institute this program!
At Joliet Junior College the Student Government organization in conjunction with the Bookstore, Business Office and Library arranged to have some of the General Education textbooks housed in the library. The textbooks (donated by the departments) may be checked out by students for in-library use. It is not a perfect solution but it seems a good temporary fix. And yes, EIU’s program is great! It certainly made my undergraduate years far less costly.
