Is suspending Internet use for a day really the best way to prove a point? Oy! Not very user-focused.

Even though the philosophy is different, this reminds me of the old “Turn Off The TV” for a day campaign. That was supposed to stop kids from watching tv… right….

I’m sure their patrons are thrilled to be part of such a moving response to bad law.

I think you have to understand the background. This law would require librarians to sign a perjury oath stating that they are filtering to the state’s standards, and would allow individual citizens to sue the library when any patron accesses a site that they (citizen(s) filing the suit) do not like. Librarians have mobilized against this bill and talked to legislators until we are blue in the face, but legislators keep saying “This is what our constituents want.” Because of the legal ramifications, many public library boards seriously feel this law would force them to stop offering internet access. Turning off access for a day, with an explanation, will hopefully encourage patrons to contact their legislators.
