Ads on Library Blogs

May 11th, 2007

Paul R. Pival decides to try out ads on a trial basis. I say go for it Paul. BTW, I also signed up with Newstex, but did it through ITI, as they are considered my publisher for this blog.

Librarians making money because of their knowledge. Totally new concept. I’m very honest with those I speak with about my MO for my blog. I do it because I love it, no question about that, but I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t make some income from blogging. Why? Because I spend a lot of time on it and should be compensated. if you don’t like it, or think it’s unethical or whatever, you know where the unsubscribe button is on your reader. I’ve never strayed from saying that. Blogs are totally opt-in.

Many librarians don’t go into the profession to make tons of money. But I think some get caught up in that theory (it’s a bit pretentious, I think) to their detriment. Of course, I’m not going to make a million dollars in this biz, but at least I’ll be compensated for my knowledge and experience. Many librarians undervalue themselves and that does a disservice to the profession.

I’m just sayin’…

Good points, all. I once had a guitar teacher who wouldn’t play unless he was paid. It wasn’t to be a jerk, it was to help others, and himself, value his work (which nobody else could deliver in quite his way).

I think there are lots of people who get paid to blog at work. If they put ads on the blog, how do they work out the percentages? If they sometimes blog at work and sometimes at home, does it get more complicated?

I think the boundaries are as fluid as the two point oh thing we’re talking about.

I’d love to see someone making “tons of money” writing a library blog. We need more wealth directed into the profession.
