Interesting thoughts... I've just started running a course called 'Better searching without Google'. It looks at some of the reasons why you shouldn't (just) use Google, and provides alternative engines that do as good a job, if not better. You can take a look at http://www.philb.com/searchwithoutgoogle.htm and if you want a list of alternative search engines then there's my list at http://www.philb.com/whichengine.htm

I may be whistling in the wind but I am beginning to sense a change, certainly in the information profession that Big G is not the be all and end all of our searching world. Let's hope it continues!

I actually like Ask, not for hard research, but more for "browsing" things. I look forward to seeing how Edison changes it up. Yahoo! yes. I guess depending on the type of research I still dig the subscription bibliographic db's.

You might want to add The Read/Write Web blog to you blogroll, they regularly talk about all the other search engines out there, e.g.
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/poll_search_innovation.php and http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_100_alt_search_engines_april07.php
