Depression/Functioning…Get Help.

April 24th, 2007

Is anyone else scared as heck after reading this?

“Dr. Federman ticked off statistics from a recent survey about the extent of mental health problems on campuses. He said that 94 percent of students reported feeling overwhelmed by all they have to do, and that nearly 50 percent reported having felt so depressed that it was difficult to function.”

In fact, it just depresses me after reading it. Depression/Anxiety/etc is getting more prevalent and something needs to be done. First: Mental illness needs to be de-stigmatized. Then, we can really work on the actual illnesses as people will (hopefully) seek help.

If your depressed/anxious/panic ridden/sad/etc, get help. You won’t just be helping yourself, but others who look up to you.

Depression and Manic Depression(current trendy name Bi-Polar Disorder) are both very serious diseases that need to be treated like any other serious disease like Diabetes and Heart Disease. I was diagnosed with Depression when I was 9(yes nine) years old and Manic Depression was I was 21. I am now 46 and have had to fight for the past 25 years to get “help” when I need it. It is easy for people to say others should get help but the reality is people who have these diseases are often under-employed and under-insured. I have a good job with good insurance. I am treatable and compliant in my medical care but I have to continually fight, continually prove need, continually pay more for certain drugs and continually go without while my doctors and insurance people debate. What happened at Virginia Tech was horrible. There is no one to blame but that one person who did what he did. However much we hope that we will somehow see or catch or react to the red flags the reality is no one can fix or save everyone.
Suicide is the number one killer of people with these diseases. Suicide is a hard choice that creates more heartache for the people left behind. Unfortunately in this case many homocides were committed before the suicide. More incidents like this will happen because of the way the insurance system, politics and money are caught up in NOT HELPING.
