The latest from the Wall Street Journal. My blog has done wonders for my career and I probably wouldn’t have gotten my last two jobs without it. Is your blog on your resume?

    There may be an equal number, particularly in higher education, who have made the claim that having a blog prevented them from getting a job - or not achieving tenure. Probably something they said.

    My web site is listed on my CV. At one interview they had printed out everything I ever wrote and questioned me about it and also about how I have customized my profiles (”why do you put birding and blogging before librarian”?? - in that case, uhm, it was alphabetccal). It was unpleasant and felt like I was being attacked. I did not and still do not want to work at a place that treats people like that for having the guts to put themselves out there and stand behind their work.

    Everyone else I have interviewed with (academic libraries) has been positive and curious about blogging and if it hasn’t resulted in a position, it has been due to other factors on both sides. I have also been actively recruited by people who found me through my blog. Wasn’t interested in the positions, but could forward them on to people who might be.
