"time suck 2.0" hee hee. At a recent presentation I gave about Web 2.0 somebody asked me how I manage my time to fit it all in. My response? "I don't." I just stay up really really late playing on the web until I pass out....

Giving my parents access to my Twitter. I figure this thing would appeal most to my mother so she knows I am still alive... ;-)

[...] Steven is right, I’ve been feeling a little feisty lately. There are several reasons that I can think of for that. Part of it is that I’ve had more time to read lately and the things I’ve been reading have been getting my hackles up. So if I come off as a buzz-kill in the coming week or two, feel free to ignore me, write scathing and inflammatory comments, send me key lime cake, or whatever you deem necessary. [...]

Ah, Steven, now I get it. All of us in California are Zen practitioners and approach all life issues with studied calm. Thus we never get into disputes or take issue with anyone. It makes for a peaceful life.

It's particularly nice when you're on the road: Everyone drives so sensibly, obeys all laws, knows to slow down when it's raining, and is ever so kind to other drivers.

Of course, those flying pigs distract us at times...

Walt: I meant "East Coast" in that he's "throwin' it down" with a 'tude. :-) Not inferring anything about the West Coast...well, not yet. ;-)

"East Coast": I see your point re: comparing services, but there is the time suck possibilities of all social tools. Twitter is just too easy (and fun) that it feels more of one...sometimes. Twitter is entertaining, yes, and we all need more. But sometimes we need a break from life. Twitter does that for me.

I have no expectations about Twitter....yet. I'm just having fun for now.

I wonder about that "East coast" remark. You suggesting that all of us out here on the Left Coast are twittering multitaskers?

Not so much. At least not all of us.

From a West Coaster who's not likely to accept a twitter invite either. Of course, since I don't own a PDA or carry a cell phone or have my PC on at home more than an hour or two a day, what would be the point?

I'm thinking of Twitter as less slut and more yammering drunk. I can get behind that. When it gets to be a drunk slut....someone call an intervention.

That's right, East-side!

No, I don't think Twitter users are sluts, I just think Twitter might be the point at which Web 2.0 jumps the shark. I really don't see the lasting power of it.

I don't really think it's fair to compare Twitter use to services like LibraryThing, Flickr, and del.icio.us because the quality of the hive mind that begins to develop with those services is much richer and much more meaningful than that of Twitter.

So Twitter is fun, it's a diversion, it's a time-suck, but it's meaningless beyond the mild curiosity it presents as another milestone in the 2.0 time-line.

Let's put it this way, I've been known to watch Maury Povich on occasion when I'm home ill, or (of late) home doing chores during the day. That doesn't make me a heartless exploiter of (insert description of Maury-guests). But he still is. Mindless entertainment has its place, but ultimately I want something more substantive. In fact, I need it.

So, my point is that, before we all pile on the Twitter ship, let's be careful it doesn't sink under the burden of unrealistic expectation. My prediction is that we'll all be bored with it before the end of Summer.

I've been wrong before though...
