“Your Library Visit is Over”

March 11th, 2007

More sad news about loud teens in libraries, this time at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library in Tallahasee, Florida

"Capece stands at the top of the steps leading to the library entrance, dressed in his deputy’s uniform, his hand resting on top of the gun in his holster.

As he watched students headed for the entrance Thursday, he stopped two teenage boys.

"You’re not visiting the library today," he told the pair, blocking them from the door.

"Why not?" one of them asked.

"You were running through the parking lot. You looked as if your were going to fight," he said. "Your library visit is over. Go find somewhere else to go."

The boys, bewildered and belligerent, shouted a string of expletives at Capece before walking away."

Again, we are not there to witness exactly what is happening, but we can only hope that the community leaders get involved.  Side note:  the article provides alternative places for the teens to hang out.

If these were the same kids that were caught urinating in the stairwell (twice) up the road at Florida State University, I may understand. There’s a line that has to be drawn somewhere.

All too often teens lack space where they can be themselves. It’s so easy to stereotype them by how they look and how they act. When we see the teens at my library acting up, we consistently reprimand them. However, we also recognize that they are an important part of our clientèle, so we also talk to them and get to know them.
