Libraries are Key to Building Local Economic Base

I wonder how I missed this.  I’ll have to do a big ‘ol file–>print on this study by the Urban Libraries Council.  From the press release.

"Making Cities Stronger: Public Library Contributions to Local Economic Development shows the specific ways local governments, agencies, and libraries are working together to achieve benefits for individuals, agencies and the community at large in four areas."

I was notified of the study from an EBSCO RSS feed that I set up a year ago.  I get a weekly update of at most 5 new articles on libraries and community.  Cool!

Big Brother…

From the article

"We, the employees of the Tompkins County Public Library, wish to write an open letter to the Library Board and the County Legislature concerning the recent actions by the Library Director to secretly install a spy camera in our building. We feel that trust, respect and privacy is important at our workplace. We need positive leadership and integrity. We need a leader who will support and energize us, so that we can better serve our patrons."

Why did the library administration intall the camera?

"Library Director Janet Steiner suspected money was being taken from the library donation box. Steiner then contacted the Ithaca Police Department, who placed a surveillance camera in a clock radio."

More bad press for libraries can be found here.

Oy!

My Shared Items

Since Google Reader is making my RSS reading so very easy these days (I really love this thing), I’ve been able to keep up with my shared items as well.  It’s so easy to add a post to it, just hit "Shift-S" while I’m reading from the aggregator.  Suweeeeeet!.

If you’re a Google Reader addict and like the stuff I blog about, why not grab my shared items feed and add it your feeds (really, you can do this in any reader)?  I read Robert Scoble’s shared items and he really helps me to stay current in the tech/geek world.  Very serendipitous.

One suggestion to the Google Reader folks.  Robert shares posts that I am already subscribed to.  Is there a way to get rid of the duplicates?
