Google Reader! Bloglines is Kaput!

February 20th, 2007

I’ve been having a go at Google Reader and all I have to say is…

OMG!!

Google may not have the best search engine these days (I’m a Yahooer), but they have some kick butt products.  Gmail is the best in e-mail and Google Reader is so very slick.  First, it had no issues importing 750 feeds (any other reader that I have tried chokes on them, including Bloglines), the interface is incredible, and, for some reason, I was able to read all of my feeds from midnight last night in about 30 minutes, a record for me (There were about 300 new posts).  Plus, it’s really easy to share posts.  Take a look at my shared items (heck, subscribe to it if you’d like).

I’ll be writing up a full review in my Library Stuff Revisted column for Information Today.

Update - I changed the title of the post as it made no sense. Also, I’m not the only one who has fallen in love with Google reader.

OMG!! is right, as in OMG what another piece of unusable crap. Gmail, Reader, and especially the Cart are all unusable for me when compared to Any other mail program, Bloglines, and Paypal.

I keep trying, but either I’m missing something, or I just don’t work the way Google designs their non-search products.

Unnecessarily complex is my two word review for all those products.

    “750 feeds”?

So you spend a lot of time inside, I take it?

  3. Margaret UNITED STATES Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0 Says:

I’m on Reader’s side. I started using it to separate work and personal feeds and have since found it to be much easier to use. There will always be people who prefer different programs, but it seems that people always like best whatever they first used. I don’t like the OVID Medline interface, but I had scientists who swore by it because that was what they learned in school.

well, now that you have an easy place to read all of your 750 feeds, you could use some help in reading the more important things first, right?

well, have a go at feeds 2.0 (http://feeds2.com/) - its closed beta, but you can get in. i have been using them for a few months now, and they are the best around. not to mention the only one. although they are not as fast as google.

you can also test drive attensa (http://www.attensa.com/) which offer a plug in for outlook. it is not as good, and also usable only on your local comp.

in the near future i believe Touchstone live (http://www.touchstonelive.com/) will be doing better. and although they are a local running software, you can publish your favorite to another rss feed.

    good luck.
    Doron.

I have Bloglines right now and I tried Google. I downed all my feeds but there are a couple of things I like at Bloglines that Google didn’t offer. I like my notifier and I like the playlists. But it is the one I used first so maybe I am just more comfortable with it.

  6. John Tropea AUSTRALIA Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0 Says:

For sure totally agree, I think this is the end of the line.

I do like personalisation, clustering, and reading by tag in Feeds2.o, and I like clustering, and items ordered by popularity in Feedeye.
MyFeedz also has clustering, but you read feeds by machine tag or your own tags.
