Online communities, virtual worlds popular among the younger set

December 11th, 2006

From the article:

“Webkinz, Club Penguin and Neopets are sites aimed at kids between eight and 14. They allow members to take on a character - usually in the form of an animal or creature - and create a world for them.”

I admit, I only linked to the story so I can say how cute Hallie is when playing with Webkinz. She goes to her friends rooms, chats with them, and earns money to buy new stuff. I’m really impressed with the way that she has taken to the social aspects of the Web. For her, it will always be about connecting with others (I’m hoping that she’ll learn how to use the Web for research as well) and I love that. The good thing is that she is not a “computer junkie” like her daddy. She goes on for 45 minutes to an hour and then plays with her Polly Pockets.

Now those are a different story. She’s addicted to those!
