I Don’t Do Scoops

November 12th, 2006

I usually don’t like it when someone sends me a link and asks to me blog about their product or tool. I have done it, but it’s very rare. Most of the time, it’s more fun for me to find cool stuff to blog about. I’m a librarian. I find stuff for a living.

While in New England last week, a colleague told me to expect something amazing from one of his co-workers. He then wouldn’t tell me what it was, but egged me on by saying that I will definitely be writing about it when it came out. I then did something that I never do. I said, I’ll write about it if you give me the right of first refusal. As the words left my mouth, I felt ashamed and embarrased. I hate people who say that stuff to me.

Why did I say it? Probably because I was curious, but also because I was feeling cocky. Blech!

That’s why I don’t do scoops. I’m not a journalist nor am I a PR person (although I love PR professionals). I’m just a guy who likes to find neat stuff.

And I’m going to keep it that way.
