Don’t Give Up

I’m in the process of placing all of my old CD’s onto iTunes. Talk about a stroll down memory lane! I haven’t heard some of this music in 15 years and I have biten by the nostalgia bug, thinking of what my life has been like during that time. Let’s see: college, grad school, 6 jobs, marriage, kids, apartment, house, 4 cars, anxiety, depression, happiness, etc. Half my life has gone by since listening to some of this music. Unreal.

Yesterday on the train, a song from Material Issue starting playing in my headphones. Wow! I haven’t heard this song since…

I wonder what they are doing now. Still around? Broken up? Any new albums?

Still in love with my new found Web freedom wherever I want it (practically), I looked them up on Wikipedia and read this:

“Throughout the remainder of 1995 and into 1996, Material Issue had recorded a set of new songs that they had hoped to shop to a new label. However, the band came to a tragic and sudden end when Ellison committed suicide on June 20, 1996 by carbon monoxide poisoning from his moped in his garage. No one knows for sure what compelled Ellison to end his life, but two circumstances that seem to be the catalysts were the end of a relationship with a woman on his birthday on April 18, 1996 and the loss of his band’s record deal from the previous year. A suicide note was found by police, but the contents of that note remain known only to Ellison’s family.”

My heart fluttered then sank. In the post Kurt Cobain era that was the mid 90′s, there were lots of suicides. I’m not sure if there were more during that time than other time periods, but every time I heard about an attempted or completed suicide, it hit me hard, especially if the person was someone I knew (even if it was through music which surrounded everything I did back then). I didn’t know about the Ellison suicide until yesterday. So sad. I cried.

If I had learned about it in the mid 90′s, I would have dropped into an emotional funk, reading every book I could get my hands on about why people take their own lives. Suicide is so encompassing and ubiquitous that you would be kidding yourself if you deny never contemplating it. We all have thought about what would happen if we killed ourselves. What would others say at our funeral? How many people would attend? Who would attend? Who wouldn’t?

Thank G-d most of us don’t have the guts to go through with suicide.

I sure didn’t.

Chicken shit.

Thank G-d.

Now, I take different approach when I hear about a suicide. I still wonder why people do it, but then I look back to everything that I have accomplished in the past 15 years. I think of Hallie’s smiling face, Ari’s adorable cheeks, and my wife’s loving arms. I acknowledge my emotions and use them to push further in my professional and personal life. I didn’t kill myself then and I will, of course, not do it now. But I won’t deny that I haven’t thought about, “What if….”

If you are depressed and are thinking of killing yourself, don’t do it. Besides taking the easy way out, you will be hurting so many people who care about you. Even those you have never met. We may know you through your work, your music, your writing, your world.

Be a chicken shit.

“Cause everybody hurts,
take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts,
don’t throw your hands,
oh now, don’t throw your hands
If you feel like you’re alone,
no, no, no, you’re not alone” – Michael Stipe

“don’t give up
you still have us
don’t give up
we don’t need much of anything
don’t give up
’cause somewhere there’s a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it’s going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don’t give up
please don’t give up – Peter Gabriel

Criminal Records Erased by Courts Live to Tell Tales – (NYT – 10/17/06) – “In 41 states, people accused or convicted of crimes have the legal right to rewrite history. They can have their criminal records expunged, and in theory that means that all traces of their encounters with the justice system will disappear. But enormous commercial databases are fast undoing the societal bargain of expungement, one that used to give people who had committed minor crimes a clean slate and a fresh start.”

Flickr is the Web Photo Tool Preferred by Superheroes and Librarians – (LLRX – 10/15/06) – “What truly sets Flickr apart as a Web 2.0 application, however, is the tagging. Tagging allows everyone to search for photos of the same subject. The tags also indicate which photos belong to a specific group. As with other social software of its ilk, there is no subject authority. Everyone does his or her own tagging. Photos by other people can also be marked and saved as “favorites” and individuals can add each other to their contact lists. Photos can be made either publicly available, or marked as private for viewing by invited friends and family. With all this functionality, no wonder Flickr was acquired by Yahoo! back in 2005.”

Corporate America embraces social networking – (Inside Bay Area – 10/16/06) – “Programmers at Almaden designed a posting, tagging and networking component to Big Blue’s employee directory so that the 330,000 IBMers spread around the world can find out more about each other when looking for collaborators or in-house expertise.”

Library is welcome to breastfeeding – (Daily Evergreen – 10/16/06) – “Neill Public Library is an important community resource with the mission of providing “an open environment in which people may freely avail themselves of the widest variety of stories, ideas, information and opinions.” We are aware that the public is never of the same opinion about any issue, including breastfeeding in public, however “the act of breastfeeding or expressing breast milk is not indecent exposure” (RCW 9A.88.010) and is welcome in the library.”

Students lose ability to surf for porn, music

Beginning Oct. 20, only the databases paid for by the district or Web sites ending in “edu” or “gov,” which identify education or government sites, will remain unblocked. It’s not a move that sits well with some parents and teachers.

“You can’t browse the shelf to see what’s out there,” said Richard Leo, the parent of a Susitna Valley junior/senior high school student. “It is censorship to the most profound degree and it has no place in public education.” (The Anchorage Daily News – 10/13/06)

Shelfari an online meeting place for bibliophiles

Shelfari is not the only company trying to bring social-networking tools to book lovers. Perhaps the best known is LibraryThing, a startup in Portland, Maine, that started its book-catalog service last year. In just over a year, the company has attracted more than 88,000 members who have cataloged about 6.2 million books through the service. In May, AbeBooks — a Victoria, B.C.-based online book retailer — bought a 40 percent stake in the company.” (Seattle-Post Intelligencer – 10/11/06) – via Shelfari Blog

New Features at Pandora

“We’ve heard quite often that you want ways to get a wider variety of styles in one listening session. Some of you are looking for stations that are an eclectic mix of all of the kinds of music you love, not just one style. Tonight we’re rolling out a brand new feature called ‘QuickMix’ to answer that request head on. When you visit Pandora, you’ll discover the QuickMix button at the bottom of your station list. Click the button, tell us which of your stations you want to mix together, and click ‘Listen Now’. We’ll automatically create a station that shuffles those stations together. You can also share your mix station with your friends.” (Pandora Blog – 10/12/06)

A random thought: Could Pandora be used as an online “listening station” for library audio materials? When you are listening to a song, Pandora can link you to your local library catalog entry for that CD or Mp3 or Worldcat record…
