Are consumer web-based RSS readers dead?

October 28th, 2006

That’s what Marc Orchant asks in a post on his blog.

It was sad to read that Pluck will cease operations and I’m not surprised that many predict the downfall of independent aggregators. I don’t think Bloglines is going anywhere fast, due to its success in the marketplace. Rojo was recently purchased and may stand the test of Internet time.

However, one that will always be around is Feed on Feeds, my aggie of choice. Why? Because it lives on my server and nobody can take it away (besides Blake). So, even if FOF doesn’t develop any further, I’ll still be able to use it in it’s present form.

This is why I use FOF. My server. My choices. No third parties. No time suck investment that may end in me losing tons of data.

One can only “own” aggregator data if it resides in a place where one has 100% control.

What would you do if Bloglines closes?

My advice? Back-up your RSS Feeds into an OPML often.
