Praying for Outreach

September 24th, 2006

In an article from the Appleton Post-Crescent, churches are reaching out to their constituencies through technology:

“Older members of the congregation can use the Web site to stay connected if it’s difficult to leave home. If sermons are part of a series, worshippers can stay current even if they happen to be out of town. If parents find a sermon particularly poignant, they can send a message to their adult children, she said.”

Libraries do this too. We bring content (books, data, etc) to our users, in the matter that works for them. Which is why we need to work on bringing our materials to those that can’t get to the library. Why can’t we send books to those that can’t get to the building. Ebooks haven’t solved the problem and probably won’t. Music is a bit different.

Libraries can be the most technologically advanced organizations, but we shouldn’t forget those that have basic library needs and just want a printed book in their hands and are too busy (or physically can’t) to get to the building.

Can we please start more initiatives that mail books to patrons?
