Do You Intranet?

September 20th, 2006

An interested post by Steve Rubel about the lack of employees’ use of Intranets in their companies.

I’m not surprised at the results of the study that he cites (although I’d like to see more evidence). I know of only a few companies that have an intranet presence, because you really only find out about them if you are told about them.

I’m starting an intranet revamp project (in proposal stage) for an organization and I got the same feeling about their Intranet. Nobody was using it.

The point of an intranet is not bells and whistles. It’s about content that changes and content that moves. Businesses are busy and you have to give employees a reason to use the intranet as a tool. I don’t think that much social networking will happen on Intranets. I’m not convinced that they should, especially in my subfield. I think that business networking and problem solving will. Intranets should act as:

a) A solution to a problem.
b) A way to market the expertese in the org.
c) A way to push current information/data.

This from CNET:

“By their nature, corporations have more complex situations than the individual consumer, panelists noted.”
