More RSS Government Goodies

September 17th, 2006

I miss RSS in Government. Ray Matthews used to kick butt with really cool government RSS initiatives. He would love this one.

An article tipped me off to an award given by the National Conference of State Legislatures for the past two years to those states that make democracy “user-friendly”. In 2005, the winner was the Utah State Legislature and this year, the Minnesota State Legislature took home the honors.

Minnesota State Legislature

That’s an RSS Feed displayed right on the front page. Looking further, we can see that this site has more feeds on it than any state government page.

There’s a feed for every member of the House and Senate, the daily sessions, podcasts (they have enclosures!) from all House Standing Committees, 2 feeds from the Legislative Research Library, and more. My favorite part is that any user can create their own customized page to track anything that they are interested in. What a cool concept and extensive use of RSS to deliver content to constituencies.

Minnesota is one very techie state. First UThink continues to kick tuchas (I heard from a reader who cracked up after I used that word twice in one blog post, so what the heck) and now the Legislature wows us with their RSS savvy. Also, let us not forget the Minneapolis Public Library has been RSS enabled for many years.
