2.0 Drinking Game
September 29th, 2006The Web 2.0 drinking game is worth a read for a good giggle.
How about a Library 2.0 drinking game at Internet Librarian in Monterey this year. A few ideas. Take a shot whenever…
+ …Someone says, “Libraries should do this” when showing a Web 2.0 tool. I do this a lot.
+ …Stephen Abram [...]
Library Student Journal
September 29th, 2006The first issue of the Library Student Journal is out. Congrats UB!
A Must Read
September 29th, 2006Print out this article on librarians and search and make copies for the reference desk and public Internet stations. A few favorite quotes from two colleagues:
Gary Price: “”For some people, if the answer isn’t in the first few results it might as well not be there,” said Gary Price, founder and editor of the [...]
Heck No! We’re Not Old
September 29th, 2006I really don’t think that picketing will solve the stereotyping issue. Maybe they should have invited the crew inside to show them what librarians really do.
Another missed educational opportunity. Will we ever learn?
Movin’ & Shakin’
September 29th, 2006A longtime friend and colleague, Marylaine Block (one of the first to link to LS!), sent me a note about the LJ Movers & Shakers for 2007:
“The editors of Library Journal need your help in identifying the emerging leaders in the library world. Our sixth annual Movers & Shakers supplement will profile 50-plus up-and-coming individuals [...]
Attensa Connect
September 28th, 2006Half of the feeds having nothing to do with librarianship, but if examined closely, can be very useful. For example, today, The Attensa Blog mentioned the release of a new blog that they are sponsoring called Attensa Connect. From the post:
“Think of AttensaConnect as a central hub for tools, tips and techniques designed [...]
Web OPAC Del.icio.us Enhancement
September 28th, 2006Bill Drew blogs:
“I have added javascript code to our ALEPH version 16 web OPAC to create a permanent link and a link to create a del.icio.us link. It works in the search results, full record display, and the holdings display. ALEPH allows the creation of permanent links. That was the basis for the javascript. It [...]
On The Muppet Show Tonight
September 28th, 2006I must admit, I didn’t “get” wikis when I started playing with them 4 years ago. There was a lot of “huh?” and “this is dumb” comments coming from my mouth. But, like many other tools, wikis grew on me, but it wasn’t until I saw their value in some far off, but [...]
EDGAR 2.0
September 25th, 2006Check out what the SEC is doing to EDGAR:
“it will enable anyone to get real-time, streaming data using RSS feeds, ATOM, and other automated Web tools, which could automatically search for newly filed SEC disclosures and deliver the desired data directly to one’s desktop.”
Yay! No more third parties!
Classes on Search
September 25th, 2006Lisa Harrington blogs:
“This semester, one of the courses I’m taking is Digital Information Services and Providers on Monday nights with Cynthia Cheng Correia, principal at Knowledge inForm. We’re focusing on the search industry as a whole as well as learning search techniques using search engines. Class discussion has been mostly about where librarians fit in [...]
HPL Book Hunt
September 24th, 2006I’m getting ready to do my last bunch of presentations for the year (and, for that matter, a long time). This Tuesday, I’ll be at SUNY Farmingdale for a blog/RSS training for LILRC.
This afternoon, I heard from two librarians at the Huntington Public Library who will be attending the workshop. They mentioned a [...]
Praying for Outreach
September 24th, 2006In an article from the Appleton Post-Crescent, churches are reaching out to their constituencies through technology:
“Older members of the congregation can use the Web site to stay connected if it’s difficult to leave home. If sermons are part of a series, worshippers can stay current even if they happen to be out of town. If [...]
Library TV
September 23rd, 2006Library TV should be an interesting blog to follow:
“Exploring video as a training and promotional tool for libraries, on the web and in television.”
From Greg McClay of the Bellerica Public Library who helps produce Library Lowdown.
Reasons To Use Ask.com
September 22nd, 2006Sarah Houghton says:
“We’ve all read the jokes like “I don’t remember how I did reference before Google!” (which I’m hoping is a joke and not a serious statement). Google is a tool, and it’s only one tool. I think many librarians forget that, and rely on Google as their sole search engine, forgetting [...]

Cardinal Seán Fall Trip To Rome
September 21st, 2006For some reason, this intrigues the heck out of me.
A quote from the latest post:
“Communicating with, supporting and serving Catholics of the Archdiocese at each of our Parishes are our top priorities. This blog is our newest effort to speak directly with you, as I’m looking forward to sharing my Rome experiences with everyone.”
Now [...]
LIBlogs - U of Albany Style!
September 20th, 2006The University of Albany is hosting weblogs for staff!
They have a bunch in their directory so far, but no mention of the blogs on the library web site.
To be sure, they are streaming a feed from one of their blogs on the page, but no mention of the other blogs, even on their sitemap. [...]

Do You Intranet?
September 20th, 2006An interested post by Steve Rubel about the lack of employees’ use of Intranets in their companies.
I’m not surprised at the results of the study that he cites (although I’d like to see more evidence). I know of only a few companies that have an intranet presence, because you really only find out about [...]
Just For the Record…
September 18th, 2006…I never asked Marie Palmer to change the name of her blog. And I wasn’t implying anything when I said “Interesting…”
It’s hard not to assume in blogland (the nature of the beast), but it’s even harder when you look at my track record. So I guess that this is partially my fault. [...]
Wyoming Authors Wiki
September 18th, 2006Wow! This is probably the slickest wiki I’ve seen from a libary related org.
The Wyoming Authors Wiki is a project of the Wyoming Center for the Book with some help (I think) from the Wymoming State Library.
Very extensive, plus contact information. Slick! (via)
Mojeek
September 18th, 2006Mojeek looks suweeeeet! It allws you to create your own personal or topical search engine with up to 1,000 sites They even have a Firefox plugin.
One issue. No RSS? Now that would be cool!. (via)
Flickr Library Humor
September 18th, 2006This evening, I added the Morris County Library as a contact in Flickr (I add a bunch of libraries a day. Make me a contact if you are a Flickring librar* - I need friends).
In their profile, the librarians mention that the library is 84 years old.
Priceless!
ResizR
September 18th, 2006MOMB links to ResizR, one of the slickest image resizing tool that I have used in a long while. One of the neatest pieces is that it can grab images from the Web and resize them, saving the user lots of time and drive space. Lovely!

More to Add to LibraryThing
September 17th, 2006Amazon informed me this morning that Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates have new books coming out in October. Added to LT and ordered from my library.
For once I wish that my local library would inform me of new books from my favorite authors. Couldn’t they work with Library Journal or [...]

More RSS Government Goodies
September 17th, 2006I miss RSS in Government. Ray Matthews used to kick butt with really cool government RSS initiatives. He would love this one.
An article tipped me off to an award given by the National Conference of State Legislatures for the past two years to those states that make democracy “user-friendly”. In 2005, the [...]
Block Party
September 17th, 2006Yesterday, we attended a block party on my parents street (my old stomping grounds). What a great time we had, hob nobbing with some of my old neighbors and meeting the new ones. This is what community is all about. After reading Meredith’s tribute, I am once again reminded that nothing in [...]
