She’s Blogging Folks!
August 9th, 2006From the “it’s about time” department, I learn from my new friend David Rothman that my other new friend, Alexia Estabrook, (I’ve known her a bit longer, having met her at the last Internet Librarian) has started a blog. Go Alexia! Subscribed!
Alexia posted a few days ago about Worldcat.org and had this to say about my comments:
“Steven Cohen over at LibraryStuff talks about this aspect of WorldCat and the need for WorldCat to offer lending information in the library’s profile. That is only half of the solution. It is then up to the library to utilize that feature. While many hospital libaries are solo or minimally staffed, and we may think we don’t have time to do stuff like create and update WorldCat profiles, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to redirecting the public to the more appropriate institution. Hospital libraries may not be open to the public but they are more and more becoming aware of our existence and we need to act accordingly.”
She’s right. Libraries who pay for access to WorldCat need to keep up their profiles and lending policies. That said, it needs to be published for all users to see, not just librarians. I still think my “enter your library card barcode and then we’ll tell you if you can actially get the book” idea would work. C’mon OCLC, give me a call. Let’s tawk.
